Now I wan’t to be upfront. Powerpumping a time commitment to make it work, and I’m sure you probably want a recommendation that you know will payoff if you put in the time so know that you’re at the right place and your hard work will pay off.

You may have some questions such as when and how long do you have to pump for? Should I use a single pump or double pump?

With these methods, you’ll learn everything you need to know about how to increase your milk supply with power pumping schedules and tips and tricks to make it easier on you.

First off, we recommend you use a double pump as it will save you time, but a single pump can work with the recommended plans below.

To begin, what is power pumping? It basically mimics cluster feeding, something a baby does during growth spurts, which works by constantly emptying your breasts on a consistent basis.

Power pumping is not supposed to eliminate all of your pumping sessions but only replace at least one of your pumping sessions.

You may feel defeated after one day, but remember, many women see success after a week or two. So hang in there!

Here is a pretty basic and straight forward way to power pump sessions for your baby. Make sure you have at least 1 hour before you decide to go for your pumping session.

Method #1 – Here is one of the most popular recommendations. You can even double pump using the following schedule:

  1. Pump between 15 – 20 minutes
  2. Rest between 15 – 20 minutes
  3. Pump for 10 minutes
  4. Rest for 10 minutes
  5. Pump for 10 minutes

Pro Tip:  Try to do at least one power pumping session every day until you see an increase in your milk supply. If you want to boost your milk supply even more, it is best practice to power pump even more throughout the day (2 sessions is what many will stick with).

Method #2 – Straight Ten Method: Another method that commonly used by moms is shown below. Did you know that breasts that are lactating typcially empty within 10 – 15 minutes, thus you can try to do this schedule:

Method #3 – Quick Pump. While it may not always be easy to pump in a full hour, some opt to do two 30-minute sessions

This will absolutely not affect the result of your pumping sessions by splitting them into two. Breaking the pumping up into two sessions will still act as if you are mimicking cluster feeding.

Pro Tip:  If you want to pump conistently, make sure to stow your breast pump in a convenient location in your house make sure to pump often, every 5 – 10 minutes every hour or so for at least 10 times a day and this will also recreate the approaches we discussed above.

You don’t have to worry about sitting at the pump for too long, just make sure you do it frequently throughout the day.

Some experts suggest even pumping for 2 hours daily for at least two days which is equivalent to pumping 12 times per day vs. 10 times a day in the above recommendations. Either will work just fine.

Another great website to reference for breastfeeding is kellymom.com which states that you can even nurse and pump every half-hour to hour for several hours. Keep doing this until you notice an increase in your milk supply, typically within 2 – 7 days.

Method #4 – Single Breast Pump Method. If you’re using just a single breast pump, you can even alternate both breasts giving the other a rest while you pump. In the below example we’re using 5 minutes intervals but you can also choose 10 minutes. This way, you can choose between 30 – 60 minutes total time.

Let’s talk about another big factor: when should you pump? You should try to set aside at least 1 or 2 periods of time that you can pump without too much of a distraction. This means you can have an easier time pumping right after your baby falls asleep either in the morning or at night. Try to plan when you can pump at work or you can wake up extra early to pump before heading to work. You should also be able to ask for a private place or office at work that you can pump and they should be willing to help with this.

Pro Tip: Many times, you’ll get caught up with work or other things and you may miss a block of pumping time, but the most important thing to remember is to do it as soon as you can because your aim is to keep those breasts empty to signal more breast milk production. If your breasts are feeling empty, they are likely to maintain a slow and low production.

If you don’t see an increase in milk supply after two weeks, there may be a chance that your body simply cannot produce the amount of milk you’re going after due to something called IGT or Insufficient Glandular Tissue whereby you may don’t have enough of the cells responsible for making milk. You can try to overcome this issue by trying to pump more frequently to stimulate more production, but there is no guarantee that it will work.

Power Pumping Pro: Tips And Tricks

I’ve compiled a list of amazing tips you can use to help you increase you odds of making the most milk you possibly can, check them out below:

  1. Did you know that you breastmilk is ok to use at room temperature for upto 8 hours which means that you don’t have to keep washing your pumping parts after every pump session. If you’re not sure about waiting that long, then you can even try every 3 – 6 hours.
  2. If you plan on pumping for 2 days, you can wash your pump parts once and store them in the fridge for the next day.
  3. If you intend on pumping, you’ll want to have a good breast pump that will make every minute count. Instead of opting for a single breast pump, try to get a double breast pump so that you can have more time and become more efficent.
  4. There are quite a few pumping bras you can purchase or you can make one yourself. These are very helpful so that you don’t have to hold up the bottles all the time.
  5. This is probably the biggest tip and I encourage you to take it to heart… you have to make sure that your breasts are completely empty and also use your hands to help massage and empty your breasts. Remember if your breasts aren’t empty they will not be stimulated enough to make more breastmilk.
  6. If you experience sore nipples, you can purchase lubricating cream before you pump to help you get some relif.
  7. Apply a warm compress to help stimulate milk flow.
  8. You’ll often try to guage your success by the amount of milk you see in the bottle while pumping, but you must remember that power pumping is all about stimulating and sending a message to your brain to fire up milk production for the long haul.
  9. Make sure that your baby is fast asleep so that you’ll have plenty of time to pump without a distraction. Try to have some additional help that can watch over the baby while you pump so that you can finish your pumping sessions.
  10. Pump when you feel you have the best undistracted time. You can choose to fill in daily routines that you typically do during your pump breaks so you can still get the things you need to get done for the day.
  11. Pumping may seem strict, but remember that what works for everyone may not work for you. You may need to break up your pumping sessions in to smaller sessions or choose to pump and nurse at the same time depending on how much time you have. Remeber that flexibility is key to your success as well.
  12. Make sure that you’re consistent and persistent with your pumping. You may get disheartened after trying for a day or two and still see a low milk supply. Don’t get overwhelmed and take it a day at a time. You’ll notice the milk come in soon enough and it may take up to two weeks to see it happen. Keep focused and keep pumping.
  13. While the whole power puming thing might seem like a long stressful commitment, change your persepective of the whole thing by seeing it as theraputic. Make it a time that you give yourself “me time” by catching a netflix show, catching up with friends, or using social media to pass time.
  14. Try to maintain a healthy diet, which will in turn keep your mind and body happy and healthy leading to the most positive outcome of your milk supply. Remember, stress can be counter productive to what you’re trying to achive so keep it at a minimum.
  15. Once you begin to see results and increase your production, you’ll have plenty of ways to use your breastmilk besides just feeding your baby. Here’s a list of 50 amazing ways to use your breastmilk.
